Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Ruth was a small child when her father, who worked as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to work in jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. She left the institution she was in within two years of her education in order to pursue the profession of acting. The path was difficult to pursue. While she was offered an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs were offered to her. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. She was in Boston in which she was employed during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and during the day as an usherette. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
